Alternative Service Break Vision Statement

The Engage Lead Serve Office offers travel opportunities that are rooted within our core values of collaboration, community engagement, diversity, and relationships. Each experience includes reflection and focuses on creating a strong student group dynamic. Trips may include service opportunities, but are concerned with student learning and experience with community and current issues.

Participant Commitment

An ASB is an opportunity for students to participate in a meaningful and impactful period of service, while engaging in discussions pertaining to the social justice issue related to the trip, extensive reflection about the experience as well as developing a new network of peers and a host of many other culminating experiences.  Also pre-service orientation meetings, service dates and a post-service wrap-up are requirements for participating in an alternative break. If you participate, you are making a commitment to attend all meetings.

Alcohol/Drug Policy

The ASB program is completely alcohol- and drug-free.  This includes the trip as well as all official ASB events before and after the trip.  There are several reasons for this policy, namely: 1)  not all participants may be of legal drinking age, and alcohol consumption for those members would be illegal; 2) drug use is illegal; 3) participants travel as representatives of University of Louisville in the communities in which we will be serving, and 4) drug or alcohol use could hinder performance on or at the project site, either during or after consumption.
