America Reads- The University of Louisville participates in the America
Reads Challenge through its Federal Work-Study Program and the Office of Civic Engagement, Leadership and Service. Students who have submitted a current FAFSA application and are eligible for federal work-study are paid $8.00 per hour to tutor at local elementary and middle schools and selected after-school programs. Students receive paid training and enrichment programming.  After one successful semester of tutoring, they are raised to 8.50 per hour.  This is an excellent paid service-learning opportunity for students who plan to work with children and youth or who are interested in understanding the literacy issues in our community. Volunteer positions are also available.

Bonner Leader- The Bonner Leader Program is a service-learning leadership program that places student teams at local non-profit organizations addressing social justice, educational, poverty, environmental, and cultural/arts issues present in the Louisville community. In addition to direct service experiences, training, enrichment, reflection, and co-education with community partners are an integral aspect of the program.  Bonner Leaders are required to complete 300 hours of service within a calendar year in order to receive an AmeriCorps education award of $1000 that can be used towards cost of attendance or student loans. Students in the America Reads Federal Work-Study program can also apply to be Bonner Leader tutors, and in addition to their salary, receive the education award.
