Professor Weaver to present on wedding cake case, free exercise, non-discrimination

Russell Weaver

Brandeis School of Law Professor Russell Weaver presented at Pepperdine University School of Law on Jan. 25, 2018.

His presentation was titled "Masterpiece Cake and the Tension Between Free Exercise and Non-Discrimination."

Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission is a pending case before the Supreme Court. At issue is whether creative businesses can refuse to provide services on the basis of their First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and freedom of expression. In this specific case, a cake decorator refused to make a cake for a gay couple's wedding.

Weaver is an internationally respected scholar in constitutional law, especially free speech.
