Professor Trucios-Haynes, 2L Jesus Ibanez participate in President Ramsey's diversity discussion

President James Ramsey, several key faculty and members of administration today initiated a campus conversation on inclusiveness, diversity, and UofL’s future. Joining President Ramsey were Brandeis School of Law Professor Enid Trucios-Haynes and Brandeis School of Law 2L Jesus Ibanez, who was chosen by his peers to speak on their behalf.

Brandeis Professor Cedric Merlin Powell was also on stage as part of the hour-long discussion.

Ibanez defended President Ramsey's actions at Halloween, when he and his staff were photographed dressed in sombreros and other Mexican-themed attire. Ibanez said the president made a mistake, pointing not to racism but "an ignorance of culture."

Ibanez received a standing ovation for his comments.

President Ramsey told the crowd that he and his wife have gone through "personal hurts" in the past two years and this incident is among them. He then reflected on words spoken by Ithaca College President Thomas R. Rochonwhen a questionable incident occurred on his campus this month: "This is a time for college leaders to step up rather than step down."

"I ask that you give me the opportunity to step up," he said. He asked for the audience's help to do so, and to re-frame this setback as an opportunity. President Ramsey also acknowledged that "We hurt the very people we're here to serve: The students."

Professor Trucios-Haynes concluded the discussion, thanking those in attendance for stepping up to "make this place the best it can be."
