Landmark Supreme Court case out of Louisville to be recognized by historical society

In the centennial year of the landmark Supreme Court decision in Buchanan v. Warley, the Kentucky Historical Society will commemorate the decision with a historical marker at the site of the house at the center of the case.

The marker will be dedicated at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, at 37th Street and Pflanz Avenue in Louisville's Portland neighborhood. It is presented by the Portland Museum and Metro Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton.

On Nov. 5, 1917, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Louisville’s race-based zoning ordinance in Buchanan v. Warley.

On Nov. 10, 2017, the Brandeis School of Law and the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research at the University of Louisville hosted a daylong symposium reflecting on the case and examining racial injustice in housing and land use today.
