David Funke, adjunct professor of immigration law at Brandeis Law, and Brandeis alum Judy Schwank ('78) met with a diplomatic delegation from Guatemala Nov. 12 to discuss appropriate diplomatic responses to immigration initiatives of President-elect Donald Trump.

The delegation included Guatemala Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales Moscoso, Consular Director Arabella Woolfolk and Ambassador Gladys Ruiz de Vielman.

"Though immigration law is called the last bastion of sovereignty, it is appropriate for foreign countries to express certain concerns and advise the U.S. about consequences," said Funke.

Such topics include fair notice of changes, the harshness of retroactive changes, humane standards for detention and international standards on the processing of refugees claims.
