3L argues in Appellate Division of New York Supreme Court

Devon Skeens

It's not often that law students have the opportunity to argue in an appellate court, but Brandeis School of Law student Devon Skeens did just that last month.

On Jan. 23, 2018, the third-year student argued a case in front of the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court.

Skeens spent the summer of 2017 interning with the New York City Office of the Appellate Defender. One of the briefs he wrote as an intern came up for appellate argument during the court's January session, and the appellate defender's office asked him to fly up to argue the case in front of a five-judge panel.

"Three of the judges complimented the quality of my brief and congratulated me on surviving my first appellate argument while still in law school," he says. "It was an incredible experience and I feel so lucky to have such a unique opportunity while still a student."

Watch the entire argument; Skeens' argument starts at about the two-hour mark.
