Taking part in a Louisville tradition

Taking part in a Louisville tradition

Over the course of my first 15 months in Louisville, I have learned that one of the best times to live in Louisville is Derby Week. The five days leading up to “the greatest two minutes in sports” are filled with activities, and a convivial spirit takes over the city. Outside the city, people think Derby is one race on the first Saturday in May. Here, we know that it is a SEASON.

Last week, I had the opportunity to experience a Derby Week tradition: Dawn at the Downs. I arrived at Churchill Downs at 6 a.m. to watch this year's horses warm up and to hear commentary on their racing records.  Even better, I got to do it in the company of some of my favorite law school alums and friends. The pictures here — hats and all — tell the tale.

It was a great chance to learn more about the Kentucky Derby and to mingle with some great people. As a transplant to the Commonwealth, I am quickly coming to understand the Kentucky Derby magic.
