Sarah OesterlySarah Oesterly Art Exhibition

Stop by and view the work of Sarah Osterly, graduating Spanish/Anthopology/Fine Arts major, at the BFA exhibition, opening today at Schneider Hall galleries.
Reception: Thursday, April 16, 2009 5:30-7:30 p.m. The 10 artists and the work they are exhibiting include Jeremy Cobb and Michael Stevens, drawings; Alec Grubola and Leslie Schier, glass installations; Brooke Herbert, photographs; Hank Knight an installational drawing; Eric Lawrence, screenprint posters; Maureen Melchior and Sarah Osterly, paintings; and Emily Voges, mixed media installations. The exhibition continues through May 10.


selene BlackSelene Black received Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship!

"Selene Black, a Spanish major with a Latin American Studies minor, has received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Argentina. Selene has previously studied Spanish on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean:  at the University of Viña del Mar in Chile (spring 2007) and the University of Salamanca in Spain (spring 2008).  She became interested in Argentina when she visited the country during a break from her studies in Chile.   In addition to taking classes, Selene worked as an elementary school English Teacher’s Aid in Chile, and is currently living in the Dominican Republic, volunteering at the Center for the Blind.  She has been a student worker in U of L’s International Center, and an ESL teacher at the Arcadia Community Center.   In Argentina as a Fulbright scholar from mid-March to mid November 2010, she will be assigned to a teaching assistantship position at an English Teacher Training College in the provinces.   She will also be volunteering with one of the community health organizations like Cruz Roja Argentina.  Her intention is ultimately to combine her language skills and interest in public health to pursue a career working with America’s growing Hispanic population.  Selene Black is a native of Custer, Kentucky, and was the Breckenridge County High School valedictorian in 2005."  http://php.louisville.edu/news/news.php?news=1413  Congratulations Selene!



Neil Gupta2009 Woodcock Society Medal is Awarded to
Latino Studies Minor Neil Gupta!

This year Neil Gupta has been named the recipient of the Woodcock Society Medal, the highest academic honor bestowed by the College of Arts and Sciences to a Summa Cum Laude graduate whose university career has been distinguished at all stages by the highest academic excellence and service. Neil will be graduating this May with a Spanish major with a minor in Latino Studies. He has also been awarded the 2009 David R. Hershberg Award for Outstanding Student in Spanish by the Department of Classical and Modern Languages. Neil was recognized in 2007 with the WLKY Bell Award for his outstanding service to the city of Louisville, particularly his work as a volunteer for Audubon Hospital and the Louisville Metro Office of International Affairs. While studying at the University of Louisville, Neil was able to put his Spanish skills to good use by serving as a reporter for Hoy en las Américas, Kentuckiana’s weekly Hispanic newspaper, the organization that served as his LALS internship site. He also traveled to Puerto Rico as a Lewis Scholar and volunteered at the San Jorge Children’s Hospital. In the fall of 2008, Neil and fellow Latino Studies minor Ryan Jones, organized an environmental fair at the Americana Community Center to provide information to the local Hispanic community about environmental issues. Neil’s latest project is the creation of an Environmental E-Newsletter in Spanish.  Next fall Neil will attend the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine, where he will be able to combine his interest in medicine with his love of Spanish. ¡Felicidades Neil!

Fulbright Student in the Kent School of Social Work, has also completed the LAS Graduate Certiicate, after conducting an internship at Kentucky Refugee Ministries. Neil Gupta

Neil Gupta Receives a Bell Award

Neil Gupta, a Spanish major and Latino Studies minor received one of the 10 Bell Awards given to outstanding volunteers in the City of Louisville this year. “The Bell award is presented to those who have shown the true “Spirit of Louisville” through unselfish, humanitarian service. Each year up to ten outstanding volunteers receive the award.” On September 27, 2007, Neil received his award at a special ceremony at the Galt House. The ceremony will be broadcast on WLKY-TV, Channel 32 on Saturday, September 13, 2007 at 8:00 - 9:00pm. Neil has been a contributin writer for Hoy en las Americas, one of Louisville’s Spanish language newspapers, and has volunteered at Audobon Hospital and the Louisville Metro Office of International Affairs. He traveled to Puerto Rico this June as an LALS Lewis Scholar where he volunteered at a children’s hospital. He will continue his volunteer service when he conducts his internship for the Latino Studies minor. Laine Lopez Ortega

Laine López is Named a 2007 Honored Volunteer for Norton Healthcare

Laine López, was also recognized at the Bell Award ceremony on September 27, 2007 for her volunteer work at the KY Racing Health Services Center. The Honored Volunteer Program is part of the Bell Awards, WLKY-TV's Spirit of Louisville Foundation, which recognizes volunteers in the Louisville area.. Laine is currently enrolled in the combined M.A./B.A. Program in Spanish and will graduate with a major in Spanish and a minor in Latin American Studies. She is pursuing the M.A. degree in Spanish, along with a Graduate Certificate in Latin American Studies. Laine completed her undergraduate LAS internship at the Kentucky Racing Health Services Center at Churchill Downs, and her work was so outstanding that Whitney Nash, the Director of the KRHSC requested that Laine be able to complete the LAS Graduate Internship there as well. ¡Felicidades Laine!

 

Toya Huckleby-Rodrguez

Toya Huckleby-Rodríguez is Adelante Hispanic Achiever’s Volunteer of the Year

Toya Huckleby-Rodríguez, a Spanish major and Latin American Studies minor was named Volunteer of the Year by the Board of Directors of Adelante Hispanic Achievers. Adelante Hispanic Achievers, Inc. is a non-profit organization chartered to provide mentoring and enrichment programming for Hispanic middle school students and their families. Toya conducted her LAS Internship at Adelante Hispanic Achievers, and has continued her volunteering for them. She also volunteered for the Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville’s Camp Unidad 2007 Summer Program. ¡Felicidades Toya!
