January 2013 Announcements

Spring 2013 Advising: Welcome back to a new semester! I am officially on sabbatical leave this spring, but will be available for advising appointments on Wednesdays from 9-2 in Stevenson 306 through April 10, 2013. Dr. Julie Bunck will be available for advising on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30-11:30 in Stevenson 306. May 2013 LALS Graduates: Please let me know if you are planning to graduate in May 2013. I need to conduct an exit interview with all LALS graduates in April before I leave for Argentina. Reminder to LALS Graduate Certificate Students:  Thursday, January 31st is the last day to apply for receipt of the MA degree and Certificates in May 2013.

Summer and Fall 2013 Internships: Internships are a requirement for the LALS minor and major (conducted in the senior year), and an elective for the LALS Graduate Certificate. The deadline for setting up an internship for the summer or fall is March 6, 2013, in advance of pre-registration. Signed applications and proposals are due on April 3, 2013. Please send an email to me to make an appointment to discuss this.

11^th Annual Study Abroad Program in Panama, May 1-28, 2013: We have extended the deadline until February 1, 2013, or until we accept 25 applicants. Applications available online on our webpage. Click on “Panama Program.” We’re more than halfway there, so please submit your application to Natalie Schuetz in Stevenson 304 as soon as possible!

LALS Club Meeting: Please plan to attend our first LALS Club meeting for the semester on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 3:30-4:30 in Stevenson 307. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Ben Ruiz, who will speak about the Behold 1500 Latinos Initiative that is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office. We need volunteers to serve as mentors/tutors for Latino students on Saturday mornings, beginning in March, at the 620 Building, which is part of the JCTCS campus. Details will be posted on our webpage.

New LALS T-Shirts and LALS Club Buttons are in! We will distribute the new t-shirts and buttons at the LALS Club meeting on January 16^th. If you can’t make it to the meeting, stop by and pick up your shirt and button in Stevenson 304.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Information Session on Wednesday, January 23, 2013; 3:30-4:30  in Ekstrom Library 104, sponsored by the LALS Club. Please plan to attend this information session about how you can help the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, through serving as a “Big” or joining our LALS Bowl for Kid’s Sake Team.
