Please visit the Día de los Muertos altar for Anthony Flaherty in Ekstrom Library between now and the morning of November 5th. Also, please sign/share your memories of Anthony in the guestbook on the altar, as it will be given to his family next week.
The Latin American and Latino Studies Program would like to express our
sincere condolences to the family and friends of Anthony Flaherty, who passed
away on September 12, 2012. Anthony was a student in the LALS 310: Introduction
to Latin American Studies that I am teaching this fall. He always demonstrated
a keen interest in learning about Latin American culture and contributed to
each class with insightful comments and questions. He was excited about giving
his oral presentation about the Guaraní Indians of Paraguay. His grandfather
worked in Paraguay for many years and his father and aunt lived there as
children. Anthony showed me a photo of his father as a young boy, wearing a cowboy
hat and boots, and standing in front of several Guaraní women. This was going
to be an image in his Power Point presentation.

Anthony touched the lives of
many people on campus and we invite friends, faculty, and staff to help us
create a loving Day of the Dead altar in his memory for the Campus Celebration
on October 29-November 5, 2012. We will erect the altar at 9:00am in Ekstrom
Library and are collecting photos and mementos to place on the altar. These
items will be returned after the altar is dismantled. Please contact rhondabuchanan@louisville.edu
if you would like to help with the altar.
On Saturday, September 22,
2012, there will be a memorial service for Anthony Flaherty on campus from 2:00-5:00
in the Interfaith Center. On Wednesday, October 3, 2012, LALS will hold a
planning meeting for the Day of the Dead Celebration at 3:30-4:30 in Stevenson
Hall 307
Sincerely,
Rhonda Buchanan
