February 2013 Announcements from the LALS Director
Spring 2013 Advising: Welcome back to a new semester! I am officially
on sabbatical leave this spring, but will be available for advising
appointments on Wednesdays from 9-2 in Stevenson 306 through April 3, 2013. Dr.
Julie Bunck will be available for advising on Tuesdays and Thursdays from
10:30-11:30 in Stevenson 306. Please contact me by email at rhondabuchanan@louisville.edu for an appointment or
if you have any questions.
May 2013 LALS Graduates: Please let me know if you are planning to graduate
in May 2013. I need to conduct an exit interview with all LALS graduates in
April before I leave for my trip to Chile/Argentina. Reminder to all LALS
Graduating Students: Thursday, January 31st is the last day to apply
for receipt of degrees in May 2013.
Here are the instructions on how to apply:
-Log on to your ULink account.
-Go to Student Services page.
-Scroll down and on the right of the screen you will find a column
labeled "Registration."
-Under Registration click on the Degree Application link.
-Follow the prompts to complete your application for degree.
-You should receive an email confirmation of submission.
Summer and Fall 2013 Internships: Internships are a requirement for the LALS minor and
major (conducted in the senior year), and an elective for the LALS Graduate
Certificate. The deadline for setting up an internship for the summer or fall
is March 6, 2013, in advance of pre-registration. Signed applications and
proposals are due on April 3, 2013. Please send an email to me to make an
appointment to discuss this.
11th Annual Study Abroad Program in Panama, May 1-28, 2013: We
have extended the deadline until February 4, 2013, or until we accept 25
applicants. Applications available online on our website. We have five spaces
left, so please submit your application to Natalie Schuetz in Stevenson 304!
A.C.E.S. Black and Latino Symposium,
February 8, 2013; Ekstrom Library and SAC; 9:00- 5:00; Keynote speakers Tyrone Blesdoe, founder of
SAAB, José González, star of “Precious Knowledge,” and special guest presenters
Tom deWit, director of Faculty Inquiry Network, and Terry Kershaw, chair of
African & African American Studies at University of Cincinnati, will engage
faculty, administrators, program coordinators and students by presenting research
and best practice models to improve/further develop instruction, programming
and the engagement of student success in and out of the classroom. Additional

Carnaval Around the World;
February 12, 2013; Humanities Quad; 11:00-1:30. Please visit the LALS booth and
learn how Carnaval is celebrated in Panama. You
are invited to enjoy Carnaval as celebrated by cultures from around the
world. We will have a variety of authentic live music, food and drink to enjoy.
Admission is free and prizes will be awarded throughout the celebration. Come
in costume, or as you are. All are welcome. Carnaval is organized by the UofL

Opportunities in Chile at the Universidad de Los Lagos; Presentation

Louisville Conference; Hispanic Keynote Address; Friday, February 22,
2013: Hispanic Keynote Lecture for the Louisville Conference, Elaine
Chao Auditorium; “Sergio Pitol: lo autoconsciente y la hibridez en el cuento y
el ensayo," by Dr. Russell Cluff, Professor of Spanish at Brigham Young

Behold 1500 Latinos! Volunteers needed
for tutoring. We need volunteers to serve as mentors/tutors for
Latino students on Saturday mornings, beginning March 22, 2013, at the 620
Building, which is part of the JCTCS campus. More Information
Big Brothers Big Sisters LALS Bowl for
Kids’ Sake. We need
volunteers to sign up for the LALS Bowl for Kids’ Sake team. Contact Leah
