Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest, and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana served over 1500 children. But there are still hundreds of children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister. The children range in age from 7 to 16 and they come from all different types of backgrounds. The one thing they all have in common is they would love to have a friend just like you!
The Kentuckiana agency has over 40 years of proven success in creating and nurturing friendships between adults and children. Volunteers are, foremost, friends to children with untapped potential. The "Bigs" are adults of all ages or high school students, and they are from all walks of life. The “Little” is a child in the program. The time commitment is minimal (at least six months) but the impact that the Big can make in the life of the Little is immeasurable. (www.bbbsky.org)
Big Brothers Big Sisters offers two different mentoring programs:
Community-based Mentoring: 2-3 times a month, Bigs and Littles meet in their community to share fun activities.
Site-based Mentoring: Bigs and Littles meet once a week in schools, community centers, and libraries to talk and have fun.
Hispanic Mentoring Initiative:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana has engaged the Hispanic community by increasing the number of Hispanic matches, enhancing our awareness of issues facing the local Hispanic population, and organizing a Hispanic Advisory Board.
We are committed to serving the needs of
Hispanic children and families across the country. The Hispanic
Mentoring Initiative continues the Big Brothers Big Sisters tradition of
outreach to at-risk youth by emphasizing the connection with Hispanic
communities and the recruitment of Latino volunteers and Littles. (www.bbbsky.org)
BBBSKY is looking for Spanish-speaking Bigs for the Community-based mentoring program! In many cases, the parents of a Hispanic/Latino Little do not speak English and so it is crucial that the child be paired with a Big who is able to communicate in Spanish.
