Admissions Information
For Current MSSW Student and Post-Master’s Applicants:
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but please allow for several weeks for them to be processed. All applicants should begin by completing the School Social Work Specialization Online Survey. Next, complete the Curriculum Planning Sheet, and read and sign copies of the technology agreement, admissions agreement, and education ethics statements. Submit all of these, along with a current resume, to Andy Frey at the address below.
For Post-Master’s Applicants:
Consideration for admission into the specialization is dependent upon successful completion of an accredited MSW program. In addition to the procedures outlined above, you will need to submit:
(a) 2 letters of recommendation from someone who is familiar with your work with children and can assess your potential to successfully complete the SSWS (PLEASE DO NOT USE THE GRADUATE ADMISSION RECOMMENDATION FORM);
(b) a statement articulating your experiences with children and families and your career goals relevant to the completion of the specialization; and
(c) an official transcript with your MSW posted to Andy Frey at the address below.
Once your application has been processed, he will email you indicating whether you have been accepted into the specialization. Once you have been accepted, complete the online application to the Graduate School at http://graduate.louisville.edu/. The $50 application fee is waived if you have applied to U of L previously. When you complete the online application, apply as a Kent non-degree post-Master’s student with School Social Work Specialization.
Once this has been completed, e-mail Sharon Crook, letting her know that you have been accepted to the specialization and that the online post-Master’s graduate school application has been completed. You should be able to register for classes on ULink (http://ulink.louisville.edu) within 3-4 business days.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I need to obtain certification before completing the program?
In addition to the procedures listed above, you will also need to send a completed TC-1 Form (also on the SSWS home page) and official transcripts from any additional institution(s) from which you obtained a degree to Andy Frey.
Please NOTE: You must provide documentation that you are employed as a school social worker to obtain the school social work certificate. Follow the directions on the TC-1 form for submitting your $50 application fee (please DO NOT send your money to Andy Frey). You are applying for a “Provisional School Social Work Certificate.” I will send the application materials to the College of Education, and they will forward them to the EPSB. You will receive your Provisional SSW Certificate shortly thereafter.
What if I just want to take the School Social Work course for post-Master’s professional development?
Contact Sharon Crook (sdcroo01@gwise.louisville.edu) for admissions procedures.
What if I have taken one of the required courses?
If you have taken one of the required courses, or an equivalent (Must be Master’s level course), submit a cover letter with your application materials, the transcript documenting successful completion of the course, and a syllabus (if it is not identical).
