Powerpoint Basics

  • Double Click to open Microsoft Powerpoint.  You will see a dialog box: 
    • Default: Create a new presentation using blank presentation
  • Click Ok
    • You will see a dialog box that says to choose an auto layout.
  • This allows you to click on the SLIDE FORMAT you want.
  • You are only going to pick a slide format for your FIRST SLIDE. You are allowed a different slide format for each slide.
  • Familiarize yourself with all possible options by scrolling down.
  • The DEFAULT format is the “title slide”.  Click OK.
  • Before you begin to type on your title slide.  Choose a background.
  • Go to Format, Highlight and Click Apply Design (not background).
  • Highlight each background to preview
  • Then choose the one you like the best
  • Click Apply (this will appear on every slide).
  • Type title and subtitle
  • Then go to Insert
  • Click new slide
  • Click the slide format for the next slide
  • Click OK
  • Type information on slide
  • Then go to Insert
  • Click new slide
  • Click the slide format for the next slide
  • Click OK
  • Type information on slide
  • Continue this process of adding new slides and typing on each slide.
  • Periodically save your work.
  • Click on File.
  • Save as…name the presentation. Make sure you are placing in correct folder and drive (drive letter for your flash drive, c: for your computer harddrive,etc).
  • Familiarize yourself with the lower left corner of your screen
    • Slide view Icon: Shows each slide individually.
    • Outline View Icon: Give the text of each slide on left in outline format. Shows the actual slide smaller on right.
    • Slide Sorter Icon: Shows all of the slides in order.
    • Notes Page View Icon: Shows your slide with a place to add notes that can be only visible to the presenter.
    • Slide Show Icon: Shows your slide presentation as it will appear to your audience. After you click on this icon, you can progress through each slide with a page up or page down.

Questions:

How do I insert a slide that I forgot to include?
    • Go to the Slide Sorter Icon. 
    • Click the slide that will be before this new slide that you want to add.
    • Go to Insert. Add new slide.
How do I re-arrange slides?
  • Go to Slide Sorter Icon.
  • Click the slide you want to re-order.
  • Drag to the slide to where you would like it to be.
How do I add a fancy transition from slide to slide?
  • It is easiest to add transitions only after you are satisfied with your slides and order of your slides.
  • Click on the Slide Sorter View icon.
  • Make sure your click your first slide.  Notice there is a dark outline around your first slide.
  • Go to Edit. Select all.
  • Look for the Slide transition icon.  (upper left corner, on the last line of possible icons.) You will see in a white box the words NO TRANSITION.
  • Place cursor on the small arrow on the right of the white box.
  • Scroll down to the very bottom.  Click on Random Transition.
  • To see the transitions that you have added:  GO to the Slide Show Icon.  After you click on this icon, page down through your slides. Nifty, huh?
How do I show my presentation in class?

Options:

  • Make sure the room has a computer, a projection panel, and the version of powerpoint that you used when you created your presentation.
  • Make overheads of your slides. Use an overhead projector.
  • Make handouts.  See below.
How do I make handouts?
  • Go to print.
  • At the bottom of the print menu, it states PRINT WHAT?
  • Review options.  You can print a handout with 3 slides with lines to the side for notetaking or 6 slides without lines. Other options may be available.
