Bioethics

This dual MSSW/MA program recognizes the value of interdisciplinary study and encourages students having an interest in both social work and bioethics to pursue these degrees simultaneously.  Bioethics is an inherently interdisciplinary field, located principally at the intersection of philosophy, the law, and the health care professions, such as clinical medicine and nursing, but drawing as well from social science disciplines as diverse as sociology, clinical psychology, and social work.

Students who participate in the dual program may reduce the aggregate credit hour requirement by 18 hours and earn MSSW and MA degrees in approximately three calendar years.

  • A student planning to pursue both degrees must submit separate applications and must be admitted to both the Kent School of Social Work and the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies.  The student must also be approved by both schools for the dual degree program.
  • Careful curriculum planning is required. Some courses in each school are sequenced or have pre-requisites and must be taken in a specific order.  The Kent School will apply nine credit hours in Bioethics as electives toward the MSSW degree.
  • Students will combine both MSSW courses and Bioethics courses during all 3 years of study following a prescribed curriculum plan (See Sample Curriculum Plan below).
  • Students may be awarded the MSSW upon completion of the 60 credits of required coursework. Students will not be awarded the MA degree until completion of both programs.
