DoD Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships Available

Department of Defense seal emblemThe University of Louisville would like to announce a scholarship opportunity offered by the Department of Defense (DoD) Information Assurance Scholarship Program (IASP) to those who are interested in pursuing cybersecurity. The scholarship will be awarded for a period of up to one year (starting Fall 2018) and can be renewed if an awardee meets the requirements for scholarship renewal. 

Students who are in one of the following categories are encouraged to apply:

  • Rising Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors pursuing a bachelor's degree
  • Students in their first or second year of a master's degree; or 
  • Students pursuing doctoral degrees

The relevant academic disciplines related to cybersecurity include biometrics, business management or administration, computer crime investigations, computer and computer information science, computer engineering, computer programming, computer systems analysis, and cyber operations.

Scholarship awardees are required to work for the DoD as a civilian employee for one calendar year for each year of scholarship assistance. To be eligible for the scholarship opportunity, a student must meet the following requirements:

  • U.S. citizen at the time of application
  • Have completed (or by August 2018 will have completed) at a minimum the first two years of an undergraduate degree program and be eligible to (a) begin either the third or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program; (b) begin the first or second year of a Master's degree program; or (c) pursue doctoral studies
  • A minimum of 3.2/4.0 GPA for an undergraduate student; a minimum of 3.5/4.0 GPA for a graduate student
  • Pursuing a course of study and/or have a declared major in one of the scientific, technical, or managerial disciplines related to cybersecurity or with a concentration in cyber security 
  • Ability to obtain a security clearance

An application package for the IASP includes two letters of reference. For details, contact Dr. Ghiyoung Im (ghiyoung.im@louisville.edu) in the Computer Information Systems department at the College of Business. The candidates must indicate their interest by January 28th (Sat), and submit the application package by February 11th. It is important to keep this timeline so that we can meet the proposal deadline (February 28th). The application package will be provided to those who show interest.

The review panel at the University of Louisville will evaluate each application package carefully, and make a recommendation to the DoD. The final selection of the awardees will be made by DoD evaluators. Once selected, students will receive the full cost of tuition, books (from the institution/degree specific required book list, not books which are optional for the class), required fees (including health care), and a stipend to cover room and board. The stipend levels are $25,000 for undergraduate students and $30,000 for graduate (Master’s/PhD) students.

The University of Louisville is designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. We offer cyber security program in the Computer Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) department in the J.B.
