Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Our GlobalProtect VPN allows a registered user to securely connect to protected University resources that are not usually accessible. When users are working at a remote location, on a public network or have an unsecure Internet service, a GlobalProtect VPN provides a remote login to desktop computers, file servers, print servers, SQL servers, and more. Using a VPN ensures that University resources are accessed in a secure manner. A VPN is ideal for accessing sensitive data, such as HIPAA, FERPA and Research data, when not on the University campus.

This service has been made available to all university employees but you will need to install the software. Complete information about setting up and using a VPN is available in our Knowledge Base. Quick reference and FAQs about our GlobalProtect VPN are in the dropdowns below.

On July 19, 2022, Conditional Access will be added to our Virtual Private Network (VPN) services. This important security measure will use Microsoft’s complex tool for system authorization. In using the VPN after 7/19, you might be asked to use UL2FCTR (Duo) to complete an extra step of verifying your identity if your location or device registers as unfamiliar to the system.

The VPN uses cryptographic protocols to provide secure connectivity over the Internet. Communications from a remote computer with the VPN client to University resources will be encrypted as they traverse the Internet. Additionally, our single-sign-on (SSO) using Conditional Access will increase protection for logging into your specific account.

Our VPN service has been made available to all university employees. To request or change a VPN account, go to our Identity Management Portal and follow the steps to request, change or manage your account.

A Sponsored Account is available. An employee will need to request the sponsored account for the individual that will need to use the VPN to access to UofL technology resources. For more information on Sponsored Accounts, see our Knowledge Base.
