Course Descriptions

The following courses are taught throughout the year. Please check the schedule for upcoming courses.

  • Final Cut Express
    (Mac only) Final Cut Express is a consumer version of Final Cut Pro X (a professional video editing application). Participants will learn the principles of basic editing from the ground up, including: starting a project, capturing footage from a memory card, basic editing techniques for video and audio, and exporting to one of the many formats available. Each participant will receive hands-on experience at a Mac computer/edit workstation. Prior experience in non-linear editing is not required but basic computer skills are necessary. If you are a beginner and are wondering which editing course to start out with, you may want to get your feet wet with ‘iMovie’ first, before you enroll in Final Cut Express. Although FCE is recommended for video professionals, hobbyists, and those that want to take video editing to the next level, we welcome everyone’s attendance! For the serious video editor, the skills learned using FCE are synonymous and transferrable to the Final Cut X (Pro) app.
  • iMovie Basics
    (Mac only) Learn how to create your own original movie with easy-to-use iMovie software. Participants will learn tips on how to make a movie from start to finish, including how to plan the project and shoot video clips. You’ll get hands-on experience as you use a Mac computer to capture and edit video footage from a memory card. Learn how to add transitions, photos, and music to make it all flow together into a finished movie that you can share with friends and family. iMovie software comes pre-installed on every new Mac computer and new versions are available instantly via the Apple App Store, making iMovie the user-friendly, eye-catching, affordable choice for creating your own personal video masterpiece!
  • Mac 101: The Basics
    This basic course is designed for those that are new to the world of Macs. We’ll take a grand tour of the Mac interface, as we explore how to use the Finder, desktop, menu bar, the Dock, Spotlight, files and folders, and more. We’ll also examine how to open and close applications, set your Mac preferences, and perform software updates. We’ll go in-depth with Safari, to enhance your web experience, by examining features that make your Internet activity more efficient. Along with ‘how-to’ documentation (provided electronically), you’ll be given a full list of Mac keyboard shortcuts, and a reference chart of how to accomplish certain tasks that you may be used to doing on a Windows PC.
  • Outlook 2010 Overview (these are limited to employees only)
    This course is designed for those that use the PC version of the Microsoft Outlook client software. It is geared toward participants who are familiar with the very basics of Outlook, or other email applications. We’ll review some of the most commonly used features, as well as explore functions, you may not be utilizing, that help you stay organized and practice time management. Topics include using categories, the Scheduling Assistant, creating new contact folders and groups, using conversation mode, flagging messages, performing searches, and more. Be prepared, as inquiries of what you would like to learn or issues you would like addressed, are welcomed!
  • Photoshop CS4 Introduction
    This course is an introduction to Adobe Photoshop CS4. It is designed for someone that has either never used the software, or is new to the Photoshop environment. The end user will become familiar with the basic concepts of creating and editing an image through the use of various tools, including those that let you re-size, crop, add text, select, paint, draw, and clone images. Besides the toolbar, various palettes will be utilized. Special effects and filters will be explored, as well as using and creating layers. This course is taught on Mac computers, with essential functions that are easily transferable to the PC.
  • Plone 4 Basics: Pages, Links, & Images
    This course covers many of the basic tasks needed by contributors to add and modify pages for their UofL site via the Plone 4 Content Management System. The materials and step-by-step instructions are aimed at a non-technical user. Participants will learn how to create new and edit existing pages and folders. We’ll utilize the TinyMCE visual editor to explore text formatting styles and lists. You’ll learn the differences in internal and external e-mail and web page links as you practice these skills. Next, we’ll learn how to jazz up your site by uploading and adding photos that are ADA compliant, as well as cover the processes and instructions for adding videos. Most importantly we’ll cover saving, previewing, and publishing your work… all new processes when using Plone 4. Come join us as we play in the Plone 4 sandbox!
  • Plone 4: What's New
    If you are already familiar with Plone, you'll find that Plone 4 is an easy and rewarding upgrade with new features that deliver immediate benefits to end- users, content editors, and developers alike. We'll explore the benefits of the new upgrade and discover 'What's New' in Plone 4, as we examine some of the differences from version 3. Come play in the P4 sandbox as we practice the new features step-by-step. You'll be provided with resources, important processes, and information needed when you're ready to rebuild your department's site. Site administrators, content editors and contributors are all invited to attend.
  • Sharepoint 2010: The Document Library
    This course is designed for employees who would like to use SharePoint to store and share files. We’ll explore the Document Library, a location on your department’s SharePoint site where you can create, collect, update, and manage files with other team members. The course content is aimed at a non-technical user who will view, edit, and contribute content to the site. You’ll become familiar with how to use the SharePoint 2010 command interface and will practice utilizing the Ribbon for the most commonly used tools and controls. Participants will learn the basics of how to add, delete, and organize files and folders in the library. We’ll also discover how to create a subsite, set privacy and sharing permissions for specific files, enable notification alerts, and briefly explain versioning.
