Student Activities Board
The Student Activities Board works very hard to provide exceptional social and educational programs for the diverse student body. Our spotlight for this edition is the Lecture Committee.
The Lecture Committee had been very busy with two major events this past February, The Vagina Monologues and the Byron Hurt Lecture. Both of these events were co-sponsored by the PEACC program in an effort to eliminate violence against women. The Vagina Monologues is an award winning play by Eve Ensler that is based on Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Our production, directed by Laura Early, starred many of our most talented students. The performance, held at the Belknap Playhouse, received rave reviews and was enjoyed by all.
The lecture and film, Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes by Byron Hurt, is a riveting PBS documentary that examines the representations of manhood, sexism and homophobia in hip-hop and rap music. After dinner and a screening of the film, Mr, Hurt spoke with the students about the film and the “hypersexual males” who have a skewed image of manhood. In his “loving critique”, Mr. Hurt paid tribute to hip-hop while challenging the rap music industry to take responsibility for glamorizing destructive stereotypes of manhood. By doing so he encouraged the students to stop buying the music of these groups and instead recommended many talented hip-hop artists to listen to and support that have a more positive message.
Byron Hurt, is a former college football quarterback and long-time gender violence prevention educator. He was one of the original members of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, the leading rape and domestic violence prevention initiative in college and professional athletics. He is also the former associate director of the first gender violence prevention program in the United States Marine Corps.
Mark your Calendars for the Crawfish Boil!
The 22nd Annual SAB & RBAA (Red Barn Alumni Association) Crawfish Boil will be held at the Red Barn on Friday, April 20, from 5 to 8pm. This year’s theme is 007. This great tradition and popular event, that is adored by U of L students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, was started in 1986 by Charlotte “Crawmama” Bowen Hardin who was a member of the Student Activities Board’s Adults on Campus Committee. Looking for a unique event that would appeal to an older audience, she developed the idea of a Crawfish Boil. Charlotte's father, Dr. Bill Bowen, owned a Crawfish hatchery in South Carolina, and together with George Howe and Dave Baugh, they worked out the details of an event that has since become an institution. Dave Baugh continues to this day to be the chef for this great event. Menu includes new potatoes, corn on the cob, onions, polish sausage, red beans and rice, hotdogs and of course over 400 pounds of Crawfish from the great state of Louisiana through the University Club and Blue Fin. Charge is still only $5 for all you can eat.
Zeta Phi Beta Sleepout for the Homeless
The 14th Annual Zeta Phi Beta Sleepout for the Homeless will be at the Red Barn on Saturday, March 31, from 6pm to 6am on Sunday, April 1. People wishing to drop off clothing can do so during this event. This event is supported by the Red Barn Programs Office, who help provide staffing including a DPS officer, hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, soft drinks, bottled water and other food and breakfast items. All donated items to this very worthy cause are taken to the Salvation Army in Louisville.
Red Barn Endowed Programs
The 3 endowed programs administered and supported by the Student Activities Department through the Red Barn Programs office (RBPO) are the Harold Adams Memorial Scholarship fund established in 1987, the Red Barn Alumni Association (RBAA) Florence M. Strickler Endowment established in 1992 and the Torchbearer Program established in 1994 and the Torchbearer Endowment established in 1996. These 3 endowed programs have provided a total 887 scholarships to U of L students totaling $140,870 since 1988. 100% of all contributions to these 3 endowed programs, which now includes voluntary payroll deduction for U of L employees, directly benefit U of L students. The combined market value of these 3 endowments was $410,242.28 on December 31, 2006. The combined income received on July 1, 2006 from these 3 endowments was $17,736 all of which has or will go to U of L students. The combined income that will be received on July 1, 2007 from these 3 endowments is $19,938 all of which will go to U of L students. Interested parties may contact George Howe at the Red Barn Programs office at gjhowe01@louisville.edu and 852-7467.
Up All Night
Close to 500 people for the evening came out and enjoyed lots of action. 5 students had a chance to win $5000 and two of them came very close to doing so. The All-Star Basketball games were fantastic and the dunk contest was exciting as ever. W00tz Games came out and ran a Nintendo Wii on racquetball court 2. The picture was almost 300 square feet large and was very popular. The SAB provided the DJ and music for the night and the Resident Assistant Association took care of food and drinks. It was a great time for everyone. Special thanks to Dr. Jackson for coming out late with the kids to be one of our judges in the dunk contest. There also was a great article in the Cardinal on the evening. If you didn't see it check this out:
International Night
Close to 100 international students turned out for an evening of badminton, tae kwon do, movies, food, wallyball, a velcro wall, an inflatable “giant gloves” boxing ring, and racquetball. The event is designed to encourage international students to visit the SAC and then feel more comfortable and welcome in the future, and this event has gone a long way toward reaching that goal.
Intramural Basketball Championship Night
The IM Basketball season is always the most exciting time of the year on the Intramural calendar, and this season was no different. A record 77 teams competed in 6 divisions, by far the most teams ever hosted for this league. Our competitors in every sport are always competing for a picture on the Champions Board and an IM Champion t-shirt, but there is something a little extra for IM Basketball: the Championship Games in each division were played in Cardinal Arena. This gave those games that little extra “something” which makes the night special. Starting lineups were announced, and the games themselves had “play by play” from a PA announcer. This event has been an IM tradition ever since the SAC was opened in 1990, making this the 17th year down in the Arena!
Dale Ramsay to Referee McDonald’s Game
Dale Ramsay, Director of Intramural Sports and Student Activities, has been refereeing high school basketball for over 25 years and has received many awards and honors for his hard work and dedication to the sport. Recently Dale was given perhaps his highest commendation yet when he was selected to referee the Women’s McDonalds All-American Game. This game always features the best high school players in the country, with 97% of its alumni going on to play Division One college basketball. This year’s games will played on Wednesday, March 28th at Freedom Hall, with the men’s game to be televised by ESPN at 8:30pm, and the women’s game by ESPNU at 5:00pm. Check out Dale on national television, or come on out to the game in person (no heckling allowed!) if you want to see some great basketball (and refereeing) action!
