2008-2009 Mendy Award Winners
Ellis J. "Mendy" Mendelsohn served in many capacities in an illustrious 41 year career at the University of Louisville. He was a student, a tenured faculty member of the Department of heaslth Physical Education and Recreation and the Director and the Division of Student Affairs.
However he was most reknowned for his accomplishments as the Director Intramural and Recreational Sports. Affectionately knows as "Mendy" he worked tirelessly in developing the Intramural program at UofL into one of the finest in the nation. through his efforts, he enabled thousands of students to have a more reqarding experience at the UofL by providing an assortment of traditional and non-traditional recreational opportunities. He was recognized as one of the nation's foremost authorities in the area of recreational sports.
Mendy retired from UofL in September of 1987. In an effort to recognize his contributions to the Intramural Sports program we created the "Mendy Awards" in 1988. Mendy's enthusiasm for intramural sports was unmatched. We want to recognize a few students who exhibit the same type of enthusiasm for intramural sports that Mendy did.
Unfortunately Mendy passed away on January 2, 1994. His passing was a tremendous loss to the university. UofL was Mendy's life. the students and staff were his family. In October of 1993, we dedicated the gym in the SAC in Mendy's honor. It is known as the Ellis J. Mendelsohn Gymnasium.
Without Mendy's efforts, we would not have the great program we have today. We all owe Mendy a great debt. Think of all the great experiences that we have all had working and participating in this program. We all benefit because of Mendy's vision, his dedication and his committment. It is in Mendy's honor that these awards are given. They are the highest and most sincere appreciation that we are able to share.

When deciding on this year’s recipient of the female mendy award we considered many characteristics. Sure there were other females who participated in more events than this recipient but none displayed the overall body of work that the winner did. Not only did she participate in a great deal of events this year but she was also very helpful to me in this my first year in the program. She challenged me and informed me of different policies. When she was not playing she was around cheering not only for her organization but for other teams on which she had friends playing. Thank you for displaying the characteristics we look for in intramural participants and good luck to this soon to be graduate Valerie Parrish our 2009 Female Mendy Award winner.
