It was a municipally supported public institution for many decades prior to joining the university system in 1970. The University of Louisville is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges (SACS). The university was initially accredited by SACS in 1915 and was reviewed and reaffirmed last in 2007.

Accreditation Statement (to be used as stated) - The University of Louisville is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges (SACS). SACS is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the southern states. The University of Louisville is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelor, master, specialist, doctoral, and first-professional degrees (D.M.D., J.D., M.D.).
