InfoSec Resources

The InfoSec program at the University of Louisville has made our web site an important resource center for current students, faculty, and prospective students. The Resources tab of our web site contains several important documents for easy reference. Since some of the documents that appear at a web link disappear, we have extracted the content and placed them with proper acknowledgement of the original source.

This site is password protected and is accessible only by our students and authorized guests. In this site the visitors will see documents such as the Bell – La Padula model, Computer Security Institute/FBI Annual Survey Summary, an overview of Cellular Technology, articles on Phishing, Spyware, Firewall, Access Control, SQL Injection attacks, etc. Another important document that we have placed in our web site is the article by Dr. Corey Schou on Security Curriculum Development. This article gives detailed steps to take in order to establish a security curriculum at a higher education institution.

In March 2005, a Presidential commission released a report on Cyber Security. This important document has been used in our courses for the benefit of students. This publicly available General Accounting Office document is made available for our students for easy access from our password protected web site.

The web site also contains a list of over 150 books on Information Security and over 40 journals dedicated to various aspects of Information Security. In addition, we have provided links to all the 66 Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance.

Our web site contains an additional tab marked “Useful Links” which contains an annotated collection of important links such as the NIATEC, National Security Agency, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), CERT, SANS, and numerous other pertinent links.

Bell – La Padula Model is briefly described in this one-page document. This document contains the links to the original paper by David Bell and Len Padula that appeared in 1976 as a research report of Mitre Corporation as well as other related sources. In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

CSI/FBI 2005 Survey is an annual survey conducted by the San Francisco-based Computer Security Institute, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This publicly available document lists several trends in security related activities. The original document can be found at http://www.gocsi.com . In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

Cellular Technology is rapidly changing. An industry trend article by George Lawton in IEEE Computer, June 2005, gives a quick review of where the technology has been and where it is headed. This brief article has a wealth of information on the worldwide trend in integrating voice, data, and video communications over wireless networks at a high data rate. This article is accessible for University of Louisville students based on our subscription to IEEE Digital Library. In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

Harvard symposium on E-voting discussed the best practices related to Vote Capture and Vote

Counting. This brief article addresses some important topics on electronic voting and the security issues related to that. In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

Phishing has become a major problem in today's networked world. Next Generation Security Software Ltd. has developed an excellent guide on what phishing is and how one could protect their personal information from a phishing attack. In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

Firewalls have been the mainstay of access control for network security. This technology is both hardware and software based. It has grown from packet filtering and proxy server technologies to today's stateful firewall, which uses dynamic profiling of usage and make decision about packets being legitimate or not. In this regard, Imperva company has developed a detailed white paper that is easy to read and full of useful information. In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

Application Gateways are an important component of network security protection. Much of the attacks today take advantage of vulnerabilities in applications such as SQL Server. Eric Ogren of the Yankee Group has written an article on application gateways that lay out the things to watch for in managing secure applications. In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

Access control involves multiple aspects. It is one of the surest forms of protection for security. There are three types of access controls. In the paper on Discretionary Access Control (DAC) and Mandatory Access Control (MAC), Jon Solworth describes various scenarios that one must be aware of in protecting databases. This paper on DAC-MAC is an important contribution to this topic. In another paper on access control, Ravi Sandhu and Pierangela Samarati take an in depth look at access control from various perspectives. In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

The most common form of attack on databases, other than directly accessing data, is to inject some code and extract unauthorized information. We have made available for our students two papers that highlight various forms of SQL Injection attacks. The first paper by Cesar Cerrudo of Application Security, Inc. provides several practical samples of code that could be used in a SQL Injection attack and how to overcome such attacks. In the second paper, Chris Anley of NGS Software describes Advanced SQL Injection attacks on a SQL Server database. In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

Spyware has grown tremendously and newer spam filters aim to block spyware as well. One of our students, Katie Kunkel, developed a simple brochure on spyware to illustrate the main aspects of this form of attack. In order to facilitate easy access for the students, this paper has been stored in our password protected site.

United States ' dominance in engineering, technology, and higher education has been the subject of much discussion lately. A 2005 study by the National Academy of Sciences ( NAS) addressed various aspects of American education, both K-12 as well as higher education. This important document has been published as a book under the title “Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future.” Our students were exposed to this important book and they did a book report in Fall 2005.

Our goal has been to make available a vast amount of resources to our students so that they can benefit from the wealth of information available in this fast growing field. With this in mind we have assembled a list of books on various aspects of Information Security. Most of the books in this list are available at the University of Louisville Libraries or our students can get the book through our Library's Inter-Library Loan program.
