Interplay of Privacy, HIPAA and Information Security

Abstract: The presentation will discuss the impact of various laws and regulations on the sensitive information held by institutions of higher education. The interplay between the requirements of the various regulations will be discussed. The presentation will also address the distinction between the information the various laws and regulations are intended to protect. Finally, the potential liability institutions face for failure to assure compliance with the regulations will be covered.

 

Dr. Marti Arvin , Privacy Officer for the University of Louisville , is responsible for the privacy compliance program at the university level. Her primary area of focus has been academic medicine covering all the programs in the Health Sciences campus. She has been working in compliance for over seven years. Ms. Arvin is an attorney. Before establishing herself in compliance and privacy, she practiced law with the Indiana Attorney General's Office. Prior to her position with the University of Louisville , Ms. Arvin was the Privacy and Compliance Officer for the University of Pittsburgh and the Indiana University School of Medicine. She has written and lectured extensively on physician compliance and privacy issues. She has been an active member of several boards related to health care certification and compliance.
