Information Security Issues in Bioinformatics

Abstract: The presentation will discuss issues related to security and privacy of bioinformatics data. This includes aspects of information collections, storage, transmission, access, and use. Various regulations, constraints, and legal challenges to define misuse of information will be addressed. Also, efforts of active groups interested in certification, and promotion of improved standards for medical devices and information systems will be presented. Research issues for computing professional in relation to medical informatics, health informatics, and bioinformatics security will be explored.

 

Adel S. Elmaghraby is Professor and Chair of the Computer Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Louisville. His research interests include computational biomedicine, multimedia systems, systems performance, security, visualization, and simulation. He is a member of editorial boards and conference steering committees in several organizations.  He is a technical reviewer for many journals. He has been recognized for his achievements by several professional organizations including a Golden Core Membership Award by the IEEE Computer Society.
