2012-2013 SUN Grant Call for Proposals

The SUN Grant application process for 2012-2013 is now available.

Projects funded during this cycle will be the final ones supported before the Quality Enhancement Plan Impact Report is submitted in March 2013. The entire SUN Grant funding program will undergo an extensive review after submission of the Impact Report. Future SUN Grant funding opportunities cannot be guaranteed after this 5th cycle.

The Ideas to Action (i2a) Task Group invites i2a SUN Grants applications for Academic, Co-Curricular and Student Support Projects:

  • Grant competition is open to individuals and small teams of UofL tenured and tenure-track faculty, term faculty, part-time instructors, and full-time staff members.
  • This internal funding program is designed to give faculty, staff, or teams of faculty and staff grants to develop, implement, and assess projects that will directly and significantly support the sustained incorporation of selected i2a outcomes into undergraduate academic, co-curricular and student support projects, programs, courses and curricula.
  • SUN grants fund projects up to $5,000 for individual and up to $7,500 for teams of faculty and staff.

i2a Introduction

Ideas to Action (i2a) is a multi-year effort supported by the provost to promote meaningful transformation of our undergraduate programs. The i2a initiative grew out of our commitment to fulfilling accreditation requirements set out by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC). It requires member institutions to develop a practical, university-wide quality enhancement plan (QEP) to improve student learning. The UofL plan, i2a, will sharpen our existing focus on building undergraduate students' critical thinking skills, starting in the general education program and continuing through undergraduate major courses. Students will be required to demonstrate their critical-thinking skills in a Culminating Undergraduate Experience (CUE), such as a thesis, service-learning project, internship or capstone project.

Programs and workshops are available to individual faculty, staff and departments who wish to engage in learning more about i2a and integrating its central themes—critical thinking, authentic application, and Culminating Undergraduate Experiences—into their work.

During the Fall 2012 semester, the i2a Task Group invites applications for its i2a 2012 SUN Grants. This multi-level funding program is designed to award individual and teams of faculty and staff grants to develop, implement and assess projects that will directly and significantly support the sustained incorporation of selected i2a outcomes into undergraduate co-curricular and student support projects, programs, courses and curricula.

The i2a SUN Grants will be awarded in 2013 and will be dispersed to the unit/department of individuals whose successful proposals impact one or more i2a outcomes. Budgets, support letters and final reports are part of the requirements of this internal funding program.

This is an internal grant program with guidelines established by the i2a Task Group and subject to University protocols. The grant guidelines and instructions are for the Fall 2012 funding cycle with an application deadline of Wednesday, October 10, 2012. i2a Outcomes

The focus of i2a is using critical thinking to foster student learning and Culminating Undergraduate Experiences. The two broad outcomes for i2a state that students will be able to: 1) think critically and 2) develop the ability to address authentic issues. The Paul-Elder critical thinking framework has been selected to guide critical thinking activities related to i2a.

Specific student learning outcomes for i2a include:

  1. Applying the Elements of Thought (Information, Purpose, Interpretation & Inference, Key Question, Assumptions, Concepts,  Implications & Consequences, and Point of View) in selected learning contexts.
  2. Using the Universal Intellectual Standards (Clarity, Accuracy, Precision, Relevance, Depth, Breadth, Logic,  Significance, Fairness, and Completeness) as criteria for strengthening the quality of their reasoning.
  3. Demonstrating well-cultivated critical thinking skills when engaging in authentic learning experiences.
  4. Addressing authentic disciplinary issues in a culminating undergraduate experience (CUE).
  5. Fostering meaningful community engagement experiences.

The three funding priorities for the 5th cycle of SUN grants are:

  1. Infusing critical thinking in General Education courses
  2. Developing or refining a Culminating Undergraduate Experience (CUE)
  3. Fostering meaningful community engagement experiences

Grant projects must support one of the three funding priorities in an undergraduate project, program, course, curricula or other learning context.

Selection Process

All completed applications will be reviewed by a cross-disciplinary committee made up of members of the i2a Task Group. The i2a SUN Grant rubric will be used to rank proposals based on each application’s clear, complete and relevant description of the 1st three proposal content areas of Relationship to i2a outcomes, Sustainability and Evaluation. Funding decisions will be made based on these rankings.
