Since joining the CLC early in the 2008-2009 academic year, Becky and Katie concentrated their efforts on developing a student learning outcome (SLO) for undergraduate student workers in the Division of Student Affairs.

In their own words:

In early 2008, we set out to (1) specifically address the link between Student Affairs (SA) departmental goals and i2a; and (2) develop SA staff knowledge of assessment and competencies that are essential to meaningful and useful higher education assessment. We began our process by designing a series of educational assessment workshops entitled Cardinal Learning Assessment Workshops (CLAWS) for all SA departments. A needs questionnaire was administered to SA departmental staff to determine the assessment competencies needed most. The staff in SA and i2a collaborated to present workshops throughout the 2008/09 academic year, giving SA staff a better understanding of assessment methods, SLOs, critical thinking and their relationship to i2a. The culmination of these workshops evolved into well-constructed SLOs for all student employees working within the Division of Student Affairs. The SA departments piloted our new SLOs in Spring 2010 with full implementation across divisional departments scheduled for Fall 2010. It is projected that additional division-wide SLOs will be developed.

By designing a rubric tool that gauges the progressive growth of a student worker's ability to demonstrate dependability, organization, efficiency, conscientiousness, critical thinking and the Intellectual Trait of Intellectual Perseverance, Becky and Katie have incorporated key aspects of the Paul-Elder framework for critical thinking into their work with students and programs across the Division of Student Affairs.
