GEAR UP Health Sciences Summer Academy

GEAR UP Health Sciences Summer Academy

The University of Louisville GEAR UP Health Sciences Summer Academy is a three week residential academic enrichment and career exploration program for students entering their junior year of high school who are interested in becoming a healthcare professional. The intent of this program is to cultivate student interest in health sciences, expose students to residential life on a college campus, assist students in preparing for their future, and planning a road map towards success. In this academy students meet new friends and set goals and plans for their future. Participants gain a better understanding of the healthcare workforce and whether or not they want to become a part of it. Participants also learn more about themselves through academic enrichment, college preparation, and career exploration.

The highlight of the program is career exposure in dentistry, medicine, nursing, dental hygiene, public health, and other health science fields. Students participate in active academic experiences, hear presentations from a variety of healthcare professionals, participate in hands-on activities, and attend healthcare seminars and tours to learn more about the health care system and health professionals. Students also participate in college preparation seminars and interact with our Student Development Assistants, comprised of current pre-health undergraduate students.

Housing, meals, local transportation, and educational materials are provided at no charge for those students who are accepted to participate. Families are expected to provide transportation to the Academy, away from the Academy at its conclusion, and optional pocket money for the three weeks. Forty students are selected to participate in this program each year and should apply through GEAR UP Kentucky http://gearupky.org/ .
