HIV/AIDS UPDATE - ONLINE COURSE

PURPOSE AND TARGET AUDIENCE
This course covers the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS by healthcare professionals, as well as legal and ethical aspects relating to this disease. This course is designed for all healthcare professionals.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT
Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) credit to fulfill licensure requirements for all Kentucky healthcare professionals impacted by Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) 214.610/615/620: Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Pharmacists, Dentists, Hygienists, Optometrists, Podiatrists and Social Workers. The course's Kentucky Cabinet for Health Services approval number is 0912-1526-M.

Physician Continuing Education Credit

The University of Louisville Continuing Health Sciences Education office designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nursing Continuing Education Credit
This program has been approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing for 2.4 contact hours through the University of Louisville School of Nursing, provider number 3-0046-01-2012-165, expiration date December 31, 2012. The Kentucky Board of Nursing approval of an individual nursing education provider does not constitute endorsement of program content. Participants must complete entire session, provide license and social security number and complete evaluation to receive contact hours.


INSTRUCTIONS & REGISTRATION
The course takes approximately two hours. During the course you will watch and listen to a video lecture or view the course handout. You will need a high speed internet connection to view the lecture. You'll also need a computer with Windows and Internet Explorer; you cannot take the course on an Apple Macintosh computer or on any other computer that does not have Windows and Internet Explorer.

After reviewing the materials, you will take an online test. If you pass, you will  continue with a course evaluation, after which you will be able to generate your certificate. If you do not pass, you may retake the course and test as many times as necessary without registering or paying again.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this course, healthcare professionals should be able to:

  • Describe medical and epidemiological information about HIV and the diseases and conditions it can cause.

  • Cite methods of transmission and prevention of HIV and current recognized methods of medical treatment.

  • Describe the management of HIV in the healthcare workplace and other working environments.

  • Cite the professional, ethical and legal standards applicable to a caregiver of a person with HIV.

  • Explain the appropriate attitudes and behaviors of caregivers toward persons infected with HIV.

  • Identify human services available to assist those with HIV infection.
