Course Description and Target
Audience
The ongoing outbreak of novel influenza A (H1N1), now rendered Pandemic H1N1, 2009, continues to represent a challenge in the United States and internationally. In preparation for the nation’s usual influenza season, presenters will review lessons learned from the initial outbreak of the disease, provide an overview of how the Southern Hemisphere has dealt with H1N1 for their influenza season and educate attendees on how to best prevent transmission of the virus.
This symposium will provide key information to:
1. Help reduce transmission and illness severity
2. Provide UofL faculty, public health officials and healthcare professionals the information to address the challenges posed by this pandemic.

Learning Objectives &
Outcomes
1. Describe the lessons learned from the initial outbreak of pandemic H1N1.
2. Describe how pandemic H1N1 affected persons in the Southern Hemisphere during their influenza season, including transmission and death rates along with methods employed by countries in the Southern Hemisphere to prevent and treat H1N1 and their levels of success.
3. Implement infection prevention and control strategies rapidly and effectively with efficient use of resources.
4. Implement the most recent guidelines for prophylaxis and treatment of pandemic H1N1.
5. Describe how the University will determine which, if any, faculty students and staff will receive vaccinations for pandemic H1N1 and how those decisions are made.
6. Describe the clinical presentation in and treatment for children with pandemic H1N1.
