JOB TITLE: Library Assistant

JOB SUMMARY
This is the SECOND level in a series of four classification levels for library services. Under general supervision, incumbents at this level perform a variety of work activities. General knowledge of standard library resources and procedures, as well as more advanced skill in technology, is required for work at this level. Employees generally determine their work priorities, exercise judgment, and consult with the supervisor in defining objectives and handling unusual problems. May supervise lower level staff and students.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILTIES
Create, enter and update complex records in VOYAGER, the integrated library system, according to national standards and local practice. Resolve problems.
Interpret and carry out library policy.
Create and update local databases on a variety of softwares and platforms.
Receive and process requests to order materials for the libraries' collections.
Prepare materials for shelving; perform quality control of labeled resources and records in VOYAGER.
Provide general assistance, including reference assistance, to students, faculty and other library users. Answer questions and provide specialized information. Assist users in the use of online systems, catalogs, indexes and other reference tools.
May handle business functions of a department: verify receipt of items, send invoices to be paid, accounts receivable, troubleshoot discrepancies in billing records, monitor the blocking of patron records, process deposits and bills.
Conduct basic research to locate information, resources and other materials.
Research locations for items to be borrowed from other libraries and evaluate alternatives.
Assist with payroll reporting activities.
May assist with training and supervision of Library Technicians, student assistants and temporary employees.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING & SKILLS
One year of college study in liberal arts, business, computer/information science or related field.
EXPERIENCE
Two years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience may be substituted for the requirements noted.
