JOB TITLE: Laboratory Animal Technologist
CLASS CODE: 001006
JOB SUMMARY
Provide pre-operative and post-operative care of animals, maintain animal health, assist in research, maintain inventories and record keeping, perform laboratory testing, and assist with training of other personnel at the Animal Care Center.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare animals for surgeries, acute studies, wet-labs, etc.
Perform post-operative care of survival surgery animals.
Assist research technicians with procedures and techniques regarding individual projects.
Screen and inoculate new animals upon arrival.
Maintain animal health through observations, treatments, etc. Maintain appropriate records.
Inventory stock room supplies and animal counts and place orders when necessary.
Inventory drugs and keep usage records.
Perform serology, bacteriology and other clinical tests and record results.
Assist program assistant with filing, bookkeeping, typing, etc.
Compile data for monthly billing for services, supplies, etc.
Maintain surgery, laboratory equipment, and assigned work stations (cleaning, stocking supplies, etc.).
Train personnel regarding protocols, procedures, technical data, etc. Study approved protocols and other continuing education information.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING, AND SKILLS
More than 18 months of specialized training beyond high school. Certification as Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Animal Laboratory Science.
EXPERIENCE
Three years of animal laboratory experience.
