Job Title: Nephrology Nurse III

Job Summary

Performs and/or supervises the delivery of extracorporeal therapies to renal unit patients and participates in clinical research related to improving such therapies.

Duties and Responsibilities

Participate in a multidisciplinary team approach delivering dialysis and related extracorporeal therapies during a defined work shift including matching staff assignments to the scheduled patient load; monitoring patient care staff compliance with operating policies and procedures (e.g., infection control measures, appropriate nursing techniques); handling unusual patient care situations, including emergencies.

Deliver care in conformance with the current long and short term treatment plan for each patient and educate patients and families about their prescribed plan of treatment. Monitor patient condition during the course of treatment and ensure accurate, timely, and complete documentation of the patient's condition.

Assist with the resolution of difficult problems arising during the course of treatment including the performance of emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation when needed.

Ensure appropriate troubleshooting of machine problems and correct communication with the engineering staff about machines needing repairs.

Monitor the performance of nephrology nurses (I and II) and dialysis technicians (I and II) in providing patient care, making recommendations to supervisor about annual evaluation; participate in decision making about in-service training on clinical matters which are problems and initiate special commendations or disciplinary action as appropriate.

Ensure the maintenance of an environment which is safe for both patients and staff; notify management of unsafe conditions which cannot be corrected by patient care staff through normal channels and document the occurrence of staff accidents or patient/visitor incidents and submit appropriate reports to official agencies as required by State licensure regulations.

Chair one or more dialysis unit committees dealing with such issues as quality assurance, infection control, medical records, in-service education, cost effectiveness, etc.

Develop studies of quality assurance issues of significance to the delivery of patient care and direct some such studies and participate in others. Participate in the development and implementation of clinical research studies relating to dialysis and other adjunct extracorporeal therapies.

Participate in the evaluation of new equipment and supplies by performing prescribed test procedures and accurately recording test result data.

Perform other related duties as assigned by the Unit Supervisor or Director of Nursing.

Knowledge, Training and Skills

Associate's Degree in Nursing. Registration to practice nursing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.


One year of nursing experience plus two years of dialysis experience.
