Professional/Administrative Job Specification 

JOB TITLE: Director, Sponsored Programs
CLASS CODE: 000360  


Direct the planning and coordination of programs to increase the university's extramural grant and contract funding.


Evaluate patterns of extramural activities within the university to determine allocation of resources, areas needing additional support, and problem areas with respect to extramural funding. Work with Vice President for Research and Assistant Vice-President for Research to plan and initiate strategies for increasing annual level of extramural funding from grants and contracts, working closely with deans, chairs, and faculty to implement these strategies,

Organize and coordinate support services for pre-award activities in both the Belknap and Health Sciences Campus offices of the Vice President for Research. Assign resources from the Office of Sponsored Programs Development necessary to assist faculty in developing grant and contract proposals.

Lead the implementation of the electronic grant submission programs. Organize resources and training for faculty and administrators to deal with the new university and agency regulations.

Promote the development of multi-investigation/center projects and coordinate the development of research proposals when necessary.

Evaluate current research activities in challenge areas to determine whether the funding generated for those programs is commensurate with resources being directed to them.

Monitor legislative actions that will effect funding patterns for agencies that do business with the university.


Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Higher Education Administration, or related field.


Nine years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for the requirements noted.
