Job Summary

Maintain and monitor the eye bank laboratory and ensure its compliance with medical standards. Perform duties associated with the evaluation, recovery, and distribution of eye tissue.

Duties and Responsibilities

Evaluate, recover, and distribute eye tissue on an on-call basis with other eye bank staff.

Provide hospital development to increase awareness among health care professionals regarding organ and tissue donation.

Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedure Manuals for the Eye Bank Laboratory.

Train and supervise eye bank technicians and contract labor technicians.

Monitor and document temperature, cleaning, and maintenance of the eye bank refrigerator, laminar air flow hood, specular, and slit lamp microscopes.

Perform in-situ corneal excision and recovery of eye tissue and blood samples from donors.

Perform specular and slit lamp microscopy on donor corneas, determine suitability, and dispense eye tissue for surgical transplant, implant, and research purposes.

Maintain Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) certification as an Eye Bank Technician.

Knowledge, Training and Skills

Bachelor's degree in Health, Allied Health, or Science. Certified as an Eye Bank Technician within one year of employment is required.


Two years of related experience.  Additional experience may be used on a one-to-one basis to offset the educational requirements.
