The benefit choices you make during open enrollment take effect Jan. 1, 2012, and remain in place through Dec. 31, 2012. After Jan. 1, you can make changes to your pre-tax benefits only if you notify Human Resources within 30 days of one of these “qualifying events” and provide proper documentation:

  • Legal separation.
  • Marriage or divorce.
  • Initiation or dissolution of a domestic partnership.
  • Birth or adoption of a child.
  • Loss of coverage under another employer’s plan.
  • Mandatory compliance with a family relations judgment, decree or court order.
  • Change in your employment status or that of your spouse or domestic partner (full-time to part-time).
  • Gain or loss of coverage because you or your spouse or domestic partner begin or end work.
  • Significant change in your spouse or domestic partner’s coverage during his/her open enrollment.

If you have a qualifying event in 2012 and do not provide documentation to Human Resources within 30 days, you will have to wait until next year’s open enrollment to make changes.
