Plan
What types of insurance coverage are available?
Health
The university will offer the same plans in 2012 that it offered in 2011. United Health Care offers the Choice Plus National Network of physicians and health care providers for the EPO, PPO and PCA High - HRA and PCA Low - HRA plans. The Cardinal Care Plan will still be strictly the use of U of L physicians, University Hospital and Kosair's Children's Hospital. United Health Care processes claims for UofL based on the university’s plan. UofL plans do not require you to name a primary care physician.
Pharmacy
UofL has one pharmacy benefit for people who take UofL health coverage. It is managed by Express Scripts. Under the pharmacy benefit, you pay a flat copayment for generic prescriptions and a percentage of the cost of the prescription, with a minimum and maximum copayment, for brand prescriptions.
Get Healthy Now
Get Healthy Now is a health management program that provides participants with health education and exercise programs and access to health coaches, both in person and via telephone. The program is designed to help UofL employees take a pro-active approach to their health management and to help the university slow the rise of costs associated with its health benefit. In addition, participants receive a $40/month discount on their health coverage. Those who waive health insurance can participate by completing the Waiver/GHN Registration Form(PDF).
Vision
UofL offers employee/retiree group vision plan through National Vision Administrators.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Flexible Spending Accounts are the best way to save money on expenses you pay anyway. They allow you to set aside pre-tax income to use to pay for eligible health and day care expenses. Chard-Snyder manages UofL’s flexible spending accounts. Two separate accounts are available: health care or dependent care. You may enroll in either or both, or you may choose not to enroll at all.
Depending on your tax bracket, you can save 25% to 30% in taxes on every dollar you put into the plan. For example, if you were to set aside $3,000 this year for health care expenses, you would save nearly $1,000 in taxes if you are in the 30% tax bracket. If you set aside $5,000 for child care or elder care expenses, you would save as much as $1,500.
