Residence Education Internship

Hours for internship:  75 hours per term


Objective:  To gain experience in development of community, student leadership, group living expectations and overall residence life concepts of campus housing, as well as gain an understanding of the administrative responsibilities associated with running a student development program.


Intended skill development and experience can be arranged for any combination of the following:

  • Enhance business and communication skills
  • Sharpen planning and time management skills
  • Gain direct experience in managing administrative aspects of a major residence life / student affairs program
  • Gain direct experience in hiring, training and development processes
  • Develop confidence in dealing with diverse groups from a variety of university units
  • Gain experience in developing a timeline and document regarding transition of residence halls from spring to summer use or to fall use
  • Gain experience in marketing program to potential student leaders
  • Gain budgeting planning and oversight experience in programming, staff training and community development
  • Gain experience in assessing demographic data for residential programming and leadership development
  • Gain experience in working with student judicial issues and appeals


Possible Duties could include:

  • Assist in hiring process of student leadership staff
  • Assist in recruiting, training and mentoring student leaders (volunteer and paid)
  • Update existing transition process and documentation for hall staffs and assist in training staff
  • Assist in the hiring, training and supervision of desk assistant staff in the halls
  • Create and maintain weekly schedules of desk assistants and other staff
  • Coordinate and lead regular meetings with staff
  • Maintain financial records for residence life area
  • Assist in student judicial issues and appeals
  • Assist in liaison work and staff assigned with affiliated programs
  • Assist in conflict mediation, crisis response, student behavioral development and other student concerns.
  • Research best practice standards for benchmarks and develop into programs unique to our residential life aspect
