Administrative Services Internship

Hours for internship:  75 hours per term


Objective:  To gain an understanding of the business practices involved in a major university housing program; and to gain direct experience in planning and implementing specific administrative projects including summer conference groups, student accounting and collections, and demographic analysis and reporting.


Intended skill development and experience can be arranged for any combination of the following:

  • Enhance business and communication skills
  • Sharpen planning and time management skills
  • Gain direct experience in managing administrative aspects of a major student affairs program
  • Gain direct experience in hiring, training and development processes
  • Develop confidence in dealing with diverse groups from a variety of university units as well as the private business sector
  • Gain experience in developing a timeline and document regarding transition of residence halls from spring to summer use or to fall use
  • Gain experience in marketing program to potential conference groups
  • Gain budgeting planning and oversight experience in a guest housing and conference group aspect
  • Gain experience in assessing demographic data for resident population for reporting purposes as well as retention comparison work
  • Gain experience in working with student appeals


Possible Duties could include:

  • Assist in hiring process of thirty plus summer conference staff
  • Contribute to training and development of summer staff
  • Update existing transition process and documentation for hall staffs and assist in training staff
  • Assist in supervision of conference assistants and desk assistants
  • Create and maintain weekly schedules of conference assistants and desk assistants
  • Advertise and market summer conference program through web page development and other means of media
  • Coordinate regular meetings with summer staff
  • Maintain financial records for summer conference groups and guests
  • Review and coordinate student appeals for license agreements and cancellation fees
  • Assist in student accounting process for billing and collections to include responding to students who have financial issues with payment
  • Assist in collecting and reporting demographic information regarding residents in traditional halls and the affiliated programs
  • Assist in liaison work with affiliated programs
  • Coordinate and oversee room change process for halls
