Description. This intermediate/advanced workshop will take a case-study approach to exploring issues of power dynamics in the classroom, handling conflict, and negotiating social identities.
Learning Outcomes. As a result of this session, participants will:
-Develop a deeper understanding of how power flows in classrooms.
-Identify ways of mediating conflict around difficult diversity discussions.
-Cultivate skills for negotiating social identities in the teaching context.
Presenter. David Owen is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Director of Diversity Programs for the College of Arts and Sciences. His primary research and teaching interests are in the philosophy of race, critical whiteness studies, critical social theory, and the philosophy of social science.
