Description. This session provides an overview of communication practices that harm credibility and that diminish opportunities for professional success. Strategies are discussed that enhance communication and empower participants to use verbal and non-verbal practices that result in positive outcomes in the workplace.
Learning Outcomes. As a result of this session, attendees will be able to
1. identify at least 3 communication practices that can reduce credibility.
2. discuss at least 3 strategies that can be used to avoid communication pitfalls.

Presenter. Rhonda Mattingly has been a clinical speech-language pathologist for 22 years. She has been teaching seminars in the Division of Communicative Disorders for 10 years and joined the faculty full-time in 2009. In her capacity as an assistant professor and clinical director, Dr. Mattingly educates students in both academic and professional topics. She is particularly interested in women's issues and how communication impacts the perception of competence and ultimately the advancement of women. In the area of research, Dr. Mattingly is currently collaborating with other professionals from a variety of disciplines to study issues relating to women and communication.
