Description. Teaching philosophy statements serve several purposes. They offer an opportunity for self-reflection, offer an introduction to one's teaching portfolio, provide a means of communication with one's students, and are increasingly a requirement in academic job applications. In this workshop session, led by Dr. Marie Kendall Brown, you will be given the opportunity to reflect upon your philosophical approach to teaching and learning by comparing and responding to sample teaching philosophy statements. You will also learn strategies for writing a successful statement and be given time to begin work on your own

Learning Outcomes. During this session, participants will:

• Describe key components of successful teaching philosophy statements 
• Compare and contrast sample teaching philosophy statements from a range of disciplinary perspectives
• Consider your own assumptions about teaching and how these assumptions inform your philosophy of teaching
• Begin writing your own teaching philosophy statement

Presenters. Marie Kendall Brown, Ph.D., is assistant director for teaching and learning at the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning. In her current role, Marie develops and delivers faculty development programs and services to foster teaching excellence. Marie’s research focuses on faculty learning and development, teaching for retention in STEM, and college student development from a constructive-developmental perspective.
