Description. Spring is a great time to start thinking about peer mentoring, as programs and students look forward to the arrival of new cohorts in the fall. This peer mentoring session is dedicated to discussing personal as well as program-level strategies for establishing mentoring connections between students. In particular, we will discuss what peer mentors can do to support incoming students
during the summer and suggest events to welcome new students in the fall,
including SIGS- and GSC-sponsored programming that can double as peer mentoring
events for departments with limited resources.
Learning Outcomes. As a result of this session, participants will:
- Understand the importance of peer mentoring for students transitioning to a new program, a new city, and sometimes a new country.
- Develop a set of strategies for helping new students through that transition.
- Develop a plan for summer and fall peer mentoring activities.
Presenters. Amy Lueck and Michelle Rodems.
