Research Funding

The Graduate Research Fund was established in 2012 by the contribution of funds from the SGA in the amount of $5000. The Research Fund is to be used by University of Louisville graduate students for research purposes only, such as supplies, equipment, materials, user fees, data sets, etc. This fund cannot be used for conference travel, though proposals for research-based travel (ie, to visit an archive or collection for research purposes) will be considered by the Research Fund committee. Since funds are intended to directly support a research project, requests for membership fees to professional organizations or subscriptions will not be accepted. We also cannot accept requests for the purchase of books that are available through the library or ILL. The maximum allocation for a single Research Fund application is $300.

For the pilot semester of Spring 2013, applications for reimbursement of research expenses paid during the Spring 2013 will be considered, with submission of original receipts dropped off in a clearly marked envelope to Amy Lueck in the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies offices in Houchens Building. No more than 50% ($2500) of the total fund will be allocated for reimbursements. After Spring 2013, no reimbursement requests will be considered, and the total fund will be divided evenly between Spring and Fall semester requests.  Requests for funding to be used during the summer should be submitted during the Spring semester, no later than April 23, 2013.

The Research Fund committee will consist of the SIGS Deans and all GSC executive council members. This committee will evaluate funding requests and appropriate funds according to a majority vote. Funding requests will be accepted year-round, until the fund is depleted. Those students whose projects remain unfunded may re-apply with priority status for the next academic year, when appropriate.

The committee will review Research Funding requests at their monthly meetings, which are held the fourth Tuesday of each month.  In order to be reviewed at the monthly meeting, proposals and materials must be received at least one week in advance of the meeting, on the third Tuesday of the month. Proposals that are incomplete by this deadline will be discussed at the next months' meeting. Applicants will be notified of the committee's decision within two weeks of the monthly meeting. Applications will not be reviewed during summer session; all applications received over summer will be reviewed at the August meeting. The committee is the sole arbiter of research project eligibility, and will determine whether projects receive funding, and adjust funding requests when necessary.

Application Process:

Applicants must demonstrate that their research requires or will be significantly aided by the equipment, materials, access, etc. to be purchased by the Research Fund grant. Applicants must complete the Research Funding Request Form. The form will require you to append the following materials as well: a letter of application, a cv, a project description with a proposed budget (no more than 1-2 pages), and a brief letter from the student's Department Chair, Director of Graduate Studies, or Dissertation/Thesis director in support of the student and attesting to the appropriateness of the proposed budget and project. The letter of support will be collected by the student and submitted along with the other application materials; a screen capture of an email is acceptable.

At the conclusion of the research project (or at the end of the academic year, if the project is ongoing), the recipient of the Grant agrees to submit a brief but detailed report to the Research Fund committee on the research undertaken with the assistance of the grant and to recognize the Graduate Student Council's support in any publication that results from this research (form available here).

  • Student is responsible for assuring compliance with regulations regarding human and animal research and all other university research guidelines.
  • The grant is up to $300 for academic year 2012-2013. The grant is processed through Financial Aid to be disbursed to the recipient.
  • Research funding requests will be reviewed and funds allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, until the funds are depleted.
  • No single student can receive GSC Research Funding more than once per academic year, and priority in subsequent years will be given to first-time applicants.
  • Students who do not submit their research report will not be eligible for future GSC Research Funding (form available here).
