2013 SGA PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES GRADUATE STUDENT FOCUSED QUESTIONS:
The candidates are listed below in alphabetical order by their last name.
Each had the opportunity to answer the three questions in whichever way
they decided. Please read their responses below.

If you were seated in front of an audience of graduate students right now, what
would you say to assure them you would be the best candidate to represent and
serve them?
As a Speed School Student, I've already experienced the stresses of Graduate School
courses having taken 500 level courses over the past year. Many of my friends have
transitioned into Grad Student status and I've seen how their needs changed from more
social programming to assisstance with research or getting funding for conferences. In
the Fall my boyfriend will be starting in the Business school's MBA program, which I
believe will give me a better understanding of graduate student needs from a different
academic standpoint. Having been connected to Grad Students since my Sophomore
year, I feel I can better relate to Graduate and Proffesional students and will work
towards making sure that SGA is all inclusive - and if you ever have an issue I am one
email or phone call away!
To those not in graduate school, the programmatic structure and culture of
graduate education is often difficult to understand (which means the needs of
students in those programs can often be misunderstood). What would you do as
SGA President to learn more about this constituency and their needs?
First I believe it is important to create strong connections with the Presidents of each
Graduate and Proffesional council. Since those individuals have been elected to
represent this demographic, I feel they would have a strong grasp of what their students
need and can help me to better understand what is most important to this group. When I
was the Director of Student Affairs for Speed School Council, it was my duty to host
forums to get student input on issues affecting student life (a big one that year was the
required table PC program). I've always felt this is a great way to get multiple student
input and it makes me available for in-person contact with students. I would like to
continue that idea and would love to have outreach forums on all three UofL
campuses. Finally, as I learn from other Graduate students, I will be going through the
process myself as I take a few of my required courses for my Graduate degree starting
next year.
Beyond the general benefits that "all" students receive through university
improvements, please detail how you believe any aspects of your current platform
may specifically affect graduate students at the university.
My main focus as President next year is to increase awareness and involvement of
students with SGA and begin work on the Student 21st century plan. Although the
student 2020 plan has been great in getting goals accomplished over multiple SGA
administrations, some of the remaining objectives in the plan are outdated and it doesn't
really incorporate many goals to improve the graduate student experience. I would like
to include Graduate students in the decision making of the student 21st century plan and
make sure that you are not forgotten.
My Services Vice President, Morgan Jenny, is very concerned with safety and food
services (along with many other aspects under SVP). As she works toward a safety path
on Belknap campus, we have discussed reviewing the HSC and Shelby campus to see
what safety concerns there are and what we can do to fix them.
Morgan Cooksey, the Cardinal Revolution Executive Vice President Candidate, is
interested in developing better relations with the Graduate councils in Senate. Often
there seems to be a conflict in Senate between undergraduate and graduate councils and
we want to work towards a solidarity in the councils.

1.) If you were seated in front of an audience of graduate students right now, what
would you say to assure them you would be the best candidate to represent and
serve them?
While in the past the focus of many of the campaigns have been on undergraduate student
issues, the future SGA president must not forget that he or she is representing the
ENTIRE student body. As your SGA presidential candidate, I want to ensure that your
voice is heard. Whether it be research resources or any other service you require, I want
to make sure that all of your needs are met on an efficient and effective level. In my
mind, no issue should go unnoticed. If you see an area that needs change, I plan to step in
and help you improve it.
2.) To those not in graduate school, the programmatic structure and culture of
graduate education is often difficult to understand (which means the needs of
students in those programs can often be misunderstood). What would you do as
SGA President to learn more about this constituency and their needs?
To make sure that no graduate issues go unnoticed, I would appoint a liaison in my
cabinet from graduate school so I have a primary source to vocalize any issues or
suggestions you may have. Personally, I want to be very hands-on with all student related
topics, but by creating a position with the sole purpose of focusing on graduate students
issues, we can create a more effective system to make sure that your voice is heard.
3.) Beyond the general benefits that "all" students receive through university
improvements, please detail how you believe any aspects of your current platform
may specifically affect graduate students at the university.
· My team intends to F.L.I.P the script of SGA by implementing a Fresh perspective,
establishing goal-oriented Leadership, encouraging Innovation, and expressing our
Passion for UofL and for its students. If given the opportunity to serve as the voice of the
student body, I will take time to sit down with the graduate student liaison to create a list
of problem areas that are of concern to the grad student population. From there I will
create a task force to help formulate answers to those problems. I can assure you that my
time in office will not be spent as a "resume builder." I want ALL students to be fairly
represented, because when iLeadLou, no voice will be unheard.
Carrie Mattingly
If you were seated in front of an audience of graduate students right now, what
would you say to assure them you would be the best candidate to represent and
serve them?
• First of all, I would say that I have a partial understanding of all of the things
graduate students have going on, including work, teaching, marriage, and
children, on top of all your research and course work.
• I admit that I only partially understand the circumstances of graduate students,
because it is impossible to attempt to relate to something that I have never
experienced myself.
• I would like to assure graduate students of my strong belief in discourse. Each
graduate discipline has unique needs and concerns. As SGA President, I would
make a special effort to go to graduate students instead of asking them to always
come to me. I would like to attend Graduate School Council meetings periodically
to report on the status of my initiatives and to find out if I am missing anything
from the graduate point of view.
• I think that I am the best candidate to represent graduate students, because I
acknowledge the effort that must be put in to make graduate students feel like true
members of SGA along with the undergraduate population. I would like to
explore ways, potentially bringing back a longer SGA retreat in the fall, to enable
all members of the Senate (undergraduate and graduate) to get to know one
another outside of a strictly business setting. I believe that greater mutual
understanding of each others’ circumstances will allow for more equitable
discourse on controversial issues, such as funding, that have historically divided
undergraduates and graduates.

students in those programs can often be misunderstood). What would you do as
SGA President to learn more about this constituency and their needs?
• As I stated above, I recognized that I must go to graduate students. In the past, I
know that SGA leaders, including myself, have assumed that graduate students
would come to them with issues or concerns. However, this is not always likely
given the challenges graduates face at a more developed stage in adulthood.
• I am aware that graduate students recently met with the 21st Century University
consultant, Scott Nostalgia. I am interested in getting feedback from that meetings
in order to hear the frustrations the graduate students cited firsthand in that
meeting.
• As SGA President, I would always ensure that graduates are equitably represented
in my committee appointments. Since the graduate experience is so unique, I
believe that graduates should also be able to tell me which committees are most
applicable to them. If elected, I plan to send a full list of my committee
appointment opportunities, with additions to the list as I receive them, to the full
Senate so that senators can respond with the committees that interest them. In this
way, senators could also forward the list to their councils to generate more interest
in committee service outside the Senate.

may specifically affect graduate students at the university.
• As SGA President, I would like to look at the SGA budget as a whole, with the
additional $400,000 for next year, and identify strategic ways to make sure those
dollars are going the farthest to help students. It has been brought to my attention
that departments and other university entities have significantly cut funding in
recent years for Graduate Assistant programs and Doctoral Fellowships. I believe
that if we are striving to be a premiere metropolitan research university, these are
some of the last programs that should be cut from budgets in difficult times. I
would like to look at SGA funds as a potential way to support such programs,
which could in turn show the university that they are a top priority of students.
Generally, I am interested in supporting the growth of graduate programs in
whatever ways possible through SGA.
• I am also aware that graduate students in some departments, along with
commuters, do not have adequate meeting or congregation space on campus. I
would like to work with the EVP to utilize any spaces on campus that are not
being put to effective use in order to give the graduate population somewhere to
go or to meet. Additional meeting space in the recreation center could provide
opportunities to address this space issue.
Overall, I would like to assure graduate students that these values and plans are ones that
I will hold to if elected. As a student here, SGA has been my passion, and I plan on doing
whatever possible to make it accessible to ALL students, including groups like graduates
who have been marginalized in the past. If you have any suggestions that should be added

GSC Executive Board ElectionsThe GSC will elect the Executive Board for the 2013-2014 school year at the Open Meeting on April 17th on the Health Sciences Campus. As per our Constitution, the GSC Executive Council positions are as follows: ARTICLE III: ORGANIZATION The GSC Executive Council shall consist of five officers: President, Vice President, Information Chair, Treasurer, and Travel Administrator. In addition there shall be two Senators Proxy. All officers shall serve as Senators of the SGA Student Senate and shall attend, in person or via proxy, all SGA Senate meetings.
