Planning and Budget Committee Report for Faculty Senate Meeting 6/4/08

Faculty Senate Planning and Budget Committee (P&B) met 5/14/08 to consider four proposals:

Dr. David Brown presented the proposals for the Ph.D. in Physics and the B.S. in Atmospheric Science. The committee was enthusiastic and supportive of both of these proposals. For each of the proposals, there were several points that needed explanations and clarifications. The proposals were revised and approved by the Committee. The revisions are reflected in the drafts of the proposals posted for consideration by the full Faculty Senate at the June 4, 2008 meeting.

Dr. Peteet presented the proposal, to establish a general comprehensive M.A. in Anthropology. There were only minor clarifications requested. The P&B Committee approved the proposal contingent upon receipt of the revised document. The latter has been posted for consideration at the 6/4/08 Faculty Senate meeting. It should be noted that the P&B Committee supports the need for the graduate assistantships for the program. The latter were proposed, but due to current budget constraints were not funded. P&B hopes that Dean Hudson will be able to make the assistantships available in the near future.

The proposal for the Center for Non-profit IT Services was presented by Dr. Ted Strickland, School of Business. This proposal was developed from initial collaborative work between Dr. Strickland and Mr. Paul Dolegowski, VP of Brown-Forman. P&B recognized that the Center, in some of its projected functions and direction by CIS faculty, will support the Ideas to Action (QEP) Initiative. P&B approved the proposal contingent upon submission of a revised document edited to include explanations and clarifications requested by the committee. Dr. Strickland will be out-of-town 6/4/08 and has requested that the proposal be considered at the July Faculty Senate Meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Pamela W. Feldhoff, Ph.D.

Chair, FS P&B Committee
