59 students receive club scholarships

November 7, 2008

At an awards ceremony in September, 59 UofL students received scholarships from the Alumni Association. The awards ranged from $500 to $4,000 per semester.

“Of everything the Alumni Association does, this is one of the most important,” says Jimmy Ford, executive director. “We are happy to provide scholarships to so many deserving students.”

UofL’s regional alumni clubs raise money for scholarships, largely through fund-raising events such as golf scrambles, Derby parties and silent auctions. Typically, club scholarships are awarded to students who reside within each club’s region.

The UofL Club of Southern California had the distinction being the club with the most number of scholarship recipients this year—four. The Central Kentucky UofL Alumni Club, based in Lexington, Ky., has a scholarship endowment with a market value of $217,000 (as of June 30, 2008). This is the largest scholarship endowment of any of the regional clubs.

Nineteen students received scholarships provided by the regional clubs. Others received a variety of Alumni Association scholarships: the Rodney Williams Scholarship, for the children and grandchildren of UofL alumni; the Beth K. Field Scholarship, for nontraditional students with dependents at home; the Alumni Association Scholarship, for students with outstanding academic records; and the African American Alumni Council Scholarship.

This year UofL will award $5 million in scholarships that are funded by philanthropic gifts. These include scholarship endowments in the UofL Foundation and current-use gifts that donors designate for scholarships.
