The University of Louisville Foundation Inc. is an independent charitable organization founded in 1970 to oversee funds donated to UofL. All donations come from generous individuals, businesses and foundations. As of June 30, 2008, the foundation's endowment had a market value of $746.9 million and contained more than 1,100 endowed accounts. Nationally, UofL's endowment ranks 94th in size out of 745 institutions reporting to the National Association of College and University Business Officers (as of June 20, 2007).

The schools, colleges and libraries of the university rely heavily on the funds generated by the endowments to maintain and build excellence in their programs. The UofL Foundation Inc. is a separate and distinct corporation that is directed and supervised by a Board of Directors.

The University of Louisville Foundation does not determine the use of gift funds. Funds raised are allocated according to restrictions established by donors. If gifts are made without donor restrictions, allocation is determined by the university.
