University of Louisville
Development Office
2323 South Brook Street
Louisville, KY 40292
How can I make a gift to UofL?
You can use our secure online gift form to make a pledge or to give by credit card. Be sure to indicate what area of UofL you want to support. To call in a pledge or gift, or to talk with a staff member, call 502-852-7011 or 866-872-5489, or visit our online staff directory. You can also mail a check or pledge card to our address above.
If writing a check, make it payable to the University of Louisville Foundation Inc. (write designation in memo line).
UofL is a state-funded institution. Why does it need private support?
Like most public universities, the University of Louisville has seen a decline in state support over the years. Currently, state appropriations account for just 24 percent of the university's budget. Tuition and fees account for our students and fulfill the mission of becoming a preeminent metropolitan research institution.
Where will my gift go?
You tell us! You can choose to give to a college or school, a department, scholarship, the UofL libraries or a favorite program: the choice is yours. Once we receive your gift, we place it in an account designated for the priority you selected.
I have very specific ideas about how I would like my gift spent. Can you accommodate my wishes?
Our donors are encouraged to designate their gift to an area that is important to them and in keeping with UofL's mission and vision. Please contact the UofL Development Office, or have your advisor contact us early in the decision-making process to ensure that your gift is keeping with both your wishes and the mission of the university.
How do I create a scholarship?
Contact the development officer assigned to your school or college of interest, and he or she will work with you to create a scholarship. Or you can call Diana Dicus at 502-852-7768 and she will have a development officer contact you.
How are endowments established?
An endowment is a wonderful opportunity to create a lasting legacy. Your gift is invested in perpetuity and income distributions are used to support your designated project, such as a scholarship, chair or research program. At present, the university's endowment policy is to provide annually 5.5 percent of the most recent three-year moving average of the fund's market value.
If you are interested in creating an endowment, please contact the UofL Development Office, or have your advisor contact us, early in the decision-making process. A development officer will work with you to prepare an endowment agreement detailing the terms of the gift. We ask that you sign the document as confirmation of understanding.
How do I obtain a receipt for my gift?
You will receive a gift receipt in the mail after we process your gift. Be sure to keep the receipt for your tax records. If you have lost your receipt and need a copy, you may contact Advancement Services at 502-852-6588 or by email.
Whom do I contact if I have a question about my pledge?
Contact Advancement Services at 502-852-6588 or send an email to Judy Singleton.
Whom should I contact with questions concerning my endowed account?
Contact Jim Beckham, director of donor relations, at 502-852-5064 or by email at Jim Beckham.
What is the UofL Foundation?
The University of Louisville Foundation Inc. is a 501(c)3 independent charitable organization founded in 1970 to oversee funds donated to UofL. Donations come from generous individuals, businesses and foundations.
As of June 30, 2008, the foundation had assets of more than $746.9 million and more than 1,100 endowed accounts. The UofL Foundation Inc. is a separate and distinct corporation that is directed and supervised by a Board of Directors.
The Foundation does not determine the use of gift funds. Funds raised are allocated according to restrictions established by donors. If gifts are made without donor restrictions, allocation is determined by the university.

We encourage you to talk with our planned giving staff, Suzanne Guss, 502-852-6954, assistant vice president for planned giving, and consult your attorney.
For a general gift to UofL, we suggest language as shown below:
