LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville Department of Theatre Arts will perform “How I Learned to Drive,” a dark comedy by Paula Vogel about memories of a troubled past.

The play will be performed Oct. 27-31 at 8 p.m. nightly plus a 3 p.m. matinee Oct. 31. All performances are at the Thrust Theatre, 2314 S. Floyd St.

Directed by Jim Tompkins, associate professor of theatre arts, the Pulitzer-winning 1997 comic drama portrays a complex family relationship when an uncle and his niece cross the line.

The play centers on the destructive aftermath of a childhood marred by sex abuse. The story is told in a touching and disturbing retrospective that dramatizes insights of both victim and victimizer.

“The show has very funny moments in it surrounded by very frightening ones,” Tompkins said. “That's what makes it such an excellent play. It has been a very energizing and risky project to do but well worth the time.”

Tompkins said the production will include use of a technique called "mimed figuration" that allows the actors to portray objects and/or sounds in the environment. This technique has not been used before in productions of this play, he said.

The comedic drama is recommended for adult audiences.

Show tickets are $12 for the general public, $10 for faculty and staff, and $8 for students and senior citizens. For tickets and information, call 502-852-6814 or visit
